APS PHASE III Storms into the 10 second 1/4 mile bracket

Today is a very special day for all XR6T enthusiasts, for just an hour or so ago in 30+ C ambient temperature, Vic Elfes in a blood orange XR6T made history by storming down Sydney’s brand new ¼ mile drag strip in an outstanding 10.98 sec @ 124.87 mph. This not only sets the ¼ mile performance benchmark, but also becomes the first XR6T to break into the 10 sec bracket!

Those in Sydney may have heard of Vic as he is the V in C&V Performance. Vic took a bog stock blood orange XR6T, installed an APS PHASE III System, performed the C&V magic to the XR6T’s auto and bolted on a set of small slicks.

Prior to heading off to the track, Con (the C in C&V) calibrated the PHASE III enhanced Falcon to the higher state of tune of 385 kW at the wheels – a great achievement given that the engine was totally stock and that the APS PHASE III components were the only engine performance enhancements – (no NOS or any other mods).

The Ford XR6 Turbo has a high tech multi valve engine which produces respectable power and torque with clean engine emissions. To enhance this engine was always going to take a committed effort combined with clever engineering approach to produce a very fast emission and noise legal vehicle.

From day one APS was committed to engineer a high quality 390 kW system which would continue to comply with the Australian design rule ADR 79/00 engine emission test, yet still be capable of running high 11 sec - low 12 sec quarter mile passes. In addition, to be user friendly and extremely drivable in every day bumper to bumper traffic.

Smart Power, that's what the APS PHASE III High Output System is all about. By adopting a total system approach APS delivers phenomenal power utilizing a relatively conservative turbo pressure level - and consequently lower thermal and mechanical engine loads than others who use high risk strategies of higher turbocharger boost pressure to achieve a similar quoted power result.

PHASE III smart power also means improved throttle response and great day to day driveability Along with crisp turbocharger response, a tidal wave of torque and tyre frying horsepower, the APS PHASE III High Output System delivers relaxed cruising, excellent fuel economy and a huge shot of adrenalin every time you lean on the throttle.

By adopting a totally engineered system approach, APS High Output systems are configured as a comprehensive group of products working in harmony to collectively unleash adrenalin pumping performance.

In addition, all APS Phased Adrenalin High Output Systems are designed to deliver an incremental upgrade path for XR6 Turbo performance enthusiasts. Each Phase builds on top of the previous phase in order to deliver the most cost effective enhancement path. In other words, the APS PHASE III High Output System consists of additional components such as the huge APS front mount intercooler system and ancillary components to be installed over and above the APS PHASE II High Output System.

High powered turbocharged engines rely on highly efficient intercooling to ensure a significant and consistent reduction in charge air temperature. For the APS PHASE III High Output System, APS shoehorned the largest and most efficient bar and plate intercooler core money can buy into the front of the XR6 Turbo - for the highest possible engine performance. Whilst it would have been technically easier and much cheaper to utilize an Australian produced tube and fin core, it would compromise engine performance and indeed the APS philosophy where only the best will do - and in this case, Europe's finest intercooler core has found a home in the APS PHASE III High Output System. Massive reduction in charge air temperature combined with minimal pressure loss through the intercooler results in the ultimate in air to air intercooling for the Falcon XR6 Turbo.

When you consider the craftsmanship in the 304 stainless steel Tig welded exhaust, the highly specified fuel system, enormous bar & plate front mount intercooler, technical sophistication of the Unichip computer, and the precision of the cold air intake we are sure you will appreciate and enjoy the high level of APS engineering for many years to come.

The Dyno Dynamics graph above demonstrates power and torque at the wheels on a manual Falcon XR6 Turbo fitted with the APS PHASE III High Output System. All dynamometer tests were conducted in 4th gear utilizing the trusted Dyno Dynamics Shootout mode software. This is the respected industry standard as used in Summer Nats Horsepower Hero competitions.

Tests were conducted using Shell Optimax 98 RON fuel and is mandatory for APS PHASE III applications.

We have now tested many standard Falcon XR6 Turbo vehicles and have found that power figures vary by up to18 kW (best to worst) from vehicle to vehicle. These power variances are due to a number of factors such as variation in engine component clearances, run-in status of engine and drivetrain, variation in turbocharger boost pressure and fuel mixtures. Consequently, power figures obtained with engine enhancements may vary accordingly.

NOTES - Other issues worthy of consideration

  1. Upgraded engine valve springs for both intake and exhaust valves. Talk to your local authorised APS dealer for assistance.
  2. Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission: the automatic transmission can be upgraded to cope with greater engine torque. Talk to your local authorised APS dealer for assistance.
  3. Vehicles equipped with a manual transmission: installation of a higher torque capacity clutch and pressure plate. Talk to your local authorised APS dealer for assistance.
  4. For motorsport applications other than drag racing: fitment of a large capacity engine coolant radiator and engine oil cooler system. Talk to your local authorised APS dealer for assistance.
  5. For those upgrading from a Series 1 APS PHASE II System, APS has a fuel injector upgrade program in place to assist our customers upgrade to the later Series 2 injectors at a special price. This program is available to Series 1 PHASE II customers who upgrade to PHASE III. Please contact your authorised APS dealer for further details.
